An Update on the recent visit to Cyprus...

February 2009 edition of Grapevine: " Keeping a watchful eye on pensions.. The visit to Cyprus late last year by the Forces Pension Society proved very successful with high numbers attending all the seminars. The main aim of Major-General John Moore-Bick and his colleagues was to sign up new members to the fund and to give plenty of good advice in both the presentations and individual consultations. There are over 3,000 British Servicemen and 1,000 retired Service personnel in Cyprus - but fewer than 200 of them are registered with FPS. There are also about 5,000 Service dependants living in Cyprus.

As John Moore-Bick explains:

“According to our calculations, less than 5% of service and ex-service personnel in Cyprus have access to any independent advice about their pension. We believe some retirees could be missing out big time and many of those who are still in active service do not know what to do to maximise their income after leaving military service.”

The Forces Pension Society was formed in 1946 to fight for the pension rights of Service men and women because they have voluntarily surrendered a number of freedoms taken completely for granted by civilians and have no Trade Union to represent them. Complete independence from the MOD allows the FPS to engage in vigorous dialogue with parliament, ministers, the military chains of command and government officials to ensure that Service pensions properly reflect the sacrifices made by the people serving in the forces and are at least as good as those given to other public sector workers.

The Forces Pension Society (FPS) is an independent membership organisation funded by subscription and governed as a not-for-profit limited company. It has three main objectives:-

  • Campaigning to secure equitable and justified conditions in the Armed Forces Pension Scheme for all ranks in all three Services, both serving and retired Servicemen and women, for their widows or widowers and their dependants.
  • Campaigning to seek a resolution on various iniquitous legacy issues.
  • Assisting members of the Society with service pension problems and related issues.
